Bad day

Today I had an inservice at work that only lasted about 30 minutes so as soon as I got through there I headed to my old job to visit my old patients and friends at Trinity Mission Nursing Home. My good nurse friend Lisa works there and I haven't seen her in forever and this is where my favorite patient of all time, Mary, lives. I knew it was time to clean out her closet and put all of her winter stuff away and pull out what few summer clothes she had, I was then planning on going to our local Blessing Box which is like a Goodwill and getting her some new summer clothes. Like I have said before, she doesn't really have family that comes to visit her- 1 or 2 times a year and they definitely don't bring clothes with them when they come. I don't mind though, it makes me feel so good taking care of her even though I know that she never has any idea about it.
Well I visited with some residents and Lisa and then I told Lisa that I was off to see Mary... Lisa gave me an odd look and my heart sank. She pulled me aside and quietly explained to me that Mary had passed away last week. I was and am completely devastated. If only I had came a week earlier. I am so thankful to have met this woman and I hope somehow I touched her life half as much as she touched mine. Without even knowing she was doing so, she has taught me so much about life and caring for people who cannot care for themselves.

Mary with her new haircut and wearing a new shirt I got her. She called me a boy this whole time I visited her because I had my hair back in a ponytail. I will never forget her and all the times she made me smile :)
